I had never seen it done this way before, but once my eyes were open to it, I saw a mess of 'em outside Cardinale as well. Anyhow, it seems sometimes, they plant their rootstock first, giving it a chance to grow on it's own, before grafting their budwood on, obviously at the site, rather than in a nursery.
